“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:6-7
Vera Edna Stewart Kennerson began her life’s journey on June 3, 1941 in Lavonia, LA. She was the elder of two children born to Elizabeth Morgan and Hollis Stewart.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of Cathedral of Faith COGIC, where she served as usher board president until her move to Dallas, TX in 2006. Once in Dallas she regularly attended The Potter’s House under the leadership of Bishop T.D. Jakes.
She was a 1960 graduate of St. Peter Claver School High School in Grand Coteau, Louisiana.
Vera was employed by St. Landry Parish School Board. She began as a cook within the school system. After many faithful years of service, she moved to a new job as a Food and Nutrient instructor where she worked with families teaching them how to prepare inexpensive but nutritious meals. She ended her work career working with a citywide program that provided tutoring, recreation and meals for students within the City of Opelousas.
Her love of cooking continued as she prepared meals for her family, friends and anyone who was in need. Vera was a very loving and caring woman who freely opened her heart and home to those in need. She believed in and was dedicated to prayer. A portion of her day, every day was to lift others in prayer. She loved being with her family, listening to music, coloring, and watching some of her favorite game shows.
She was united in holy matrimony to August Joseph Kennerson, III on June 1, 1984 and together they raised her three daughters. Her most significant attributes were her warm smile, encouraging words, prayers, and how she unselfishly gave herself to others that needed prayer, counseling, or just a listening ear. She was a supportive and loyal wife, mother, aunt, cousin, and friend. Her greatest joys in her life were her family, and friends.
She entered eternal rest on October 28, 2019.
She leaves to cherish her memories, three children Libby Mitchell (Tony) and Shirley Stewart-Wilson (Reginald) both of Dallas, TX, and Kimberly Stewart Sanders (Roderick) of Opelousas, LA; Four step children Catherine Forsythe, Cynthia Joubert, Gregory Kennerson, and Angela Keys; Nine grandchildren Amber Mitchell, Kalyn Stewart, Justin Gilbert, Kiersten Gilbert, Leah Wilson, Alvin Warren Jr., Devin Warren, Maya Wilson, and Reginald Wilson III; Two great grandchildren Justice Gilbert and Maci Warren. One brother Charles E. Stewart Sr. (Maria); an aunt Albirda Tillman; Two special nephews Charles E. Stewart Jr. and Harlis Steward Sr.; two special friends Shirley Pitts Turner and Gloria Lavine; and a host of relatives and friends.
